Catalysing Rural Prosperity:

The Farmers Cooperative Empowerment Project

In Peru, agriculture plays a crucial role in the economy, helping to diversify economic activities, combat food insecurity, and drive rural development. Nearly one-third of the population relies on agricultural activities for their household income. However, a significant barrier to agro-development is the lack of viable access to financial services for rural producers. Government grants and microloans offer rural farmers essential capital that is often unavailable through traditional financial institutions, enabling them to invest in their agricultural operations, such as purchasing seeds, fertilizers, equipment, and livestock.

Objective

The Farmer Cooperative Empowerment Project (FCEP) aims to create long-term economic impact in rural communities by connecting local producers with state resources, specialized training, and low-interest investment for small-scale agricultural and commercial activities.

Activities

The project cycle begins with an intensive week of training in agricultural techniques and entrepreneurial skills for cooperative members selected from various communities, followed by a comprehensive and tailored monitoring program to support their advancement. While developing their skills and growing their productive and commercial capabilities, members learn about the various state resources available to them and how to access them. The project also provides seed capital to selected cooperatives in the form of physical assets such as machinery, equipment, and land, at a below-market interest rate. This enables them to expand their production through the adoption of modern technologies that increase crop/livestock yields or transportation equipment to access broader markets.

Outcome and Impact

Through capacity building, network guidance, and microcredit, we provide rural farmers with the expertise and financial means to invest in their farms, adopt modern practices, and improve their overall economic well-being. By empowering farmers, and thus entire communities, the FCEP contributes to poverty reduction, food security, and sustainable agricultural development.
