Fostering Sustainable Livelihoods

The Fostering Sustainable Livelihoods project tackles pressing challenges faced by 200 farming households in the Lira district, in northern Uganda.

Spanning from September 2024 to August 2027, the initiative combines sustainable agriculture, health, and education interventions to strengthen community resilience and improve the quality of life for vulnerable families.

In collaboration with Children’s Chance International (CCI), a trusted NGO with expertise in education, health, and livelihood development, the project aims to create lasting impact through a holistic and community-driven approach.

Objective

Our objective is to empower the community to lead sustainable livelihoods by enhancing food security and household incomes, improving health practices, and increasing access to inclusive education for vulnerable farming households and schools in Lira District.

Activities

The project integrates sustainable livelihoods, health, and education interventions to empower vulnerable households. Farmers are trained in climate-smart agriculture practices, post-harvest handling, seed multiplication, and beekeeping to improve food security and diversify incomes. Furthermore, the farming families receive business skills training to increase earnings from their crop production. Kitchen gardens are promoted to improve dietary diversity, while community groups receive hygiene and sanitation training, including water safety consumption best practices. In schools, health clubs and gardens are established to support nutrition and learning, with an additional focus set on menstrual hygiene management and fostering inclusive education environments.

Outcome and Impact

This project supports 200 farming households by boosting crop yields, increasing household income, and improving hygiene and nutrition practices. It also expands access to inclusive education for vulnerable families. By addressing challenges in agriculture, health, and education through a holistic approach, the project enhances livelihoods and overall well-being. With a ripple effect expected to reach neighboring villages, up to 5,000 individuals could benefit.
