Building sustainable development through local partnerships

Insights from our work in Rwanda on food security, resilience and long-term impact

What does sustainable development look like in practice?

In a recent interview with Fundraiso, our colleague Valentina Beeler shares insights into Suyana’s approach to building long-term, locally rooted solutions in Rwanda.

Drawing on over 20 years of experience in South America, Suyana is now expanding its work to new contexts, with a strong focus on collaboration, trust, and local ownership. This approach is at the heart of the “Villages of Hope” project, which supports communities in strengthening food security and improving livelihoods.

Insights from our work in Rwanda on food security, resilience and long-term impact

A locally rooted approach to lasting impact

In Rwanda, where a large part of the population depends on agriculture for their livelihoods, improving food production is key to enhancing both health and economic stability. Suyana works closely with local partners and communities to develop practical, sustainable solutions adapted to local realities.

Through hands-on training, knowledge sharing, and community engagement, families are supported in adopting more sustainable agricultural practices. These efforts not only improve crop yields but also contribute to better nutrition, environmental sustainability, and long-term resilience.

Strengthening communities from within

A central element of the approach is to empower communities to take ownership of their development. Savings groups, for example, enable families to invest in small businesses or community initiatives while also creating a safety net in times of need.

Beyond financial support, these groups foster trust, collaboration, and shared responsibility — key ingredients for sustainable change. Over time, experienced groups begin to share their knowledge with others, creating a ripple effect that extends beyond the initial project.

An integrated model for sustainable development

Suyana’s work combines economic empowerment, community organisation, and social protection. As household incomes increase, families are more likely to invest in health and education, creating a positive cycle that improves overall quality of life.

This integrated approach goes beyond addressing individual challenges — it supports structural change and enables communities to build their own path towards sustainable development.

Partnerships built on trust and collaboration

Strong partnerships are essential to this work. Suyana collaborates with locally rooted organisations, such as its implementation partner in Rwanda, ensuring that projects are adapted to the needs and realities of the communities.

Close cooperation with local leaders, institutions, and stakeholders helps embed the initiatives within existing systems, strengthening their long-term impact and sustainability.

Ultimately, this approach reflects a clear belief: lasting impact is only possible when solutions are developed together with the communities they are meant to serve.
