Building Healthy and Sustainable Futures
In Uganda’s Kanungu district, many farming families face daily challenges related to malnutrition, limited income opportunities, and poor access to water and health services. The Building Healthy and Sustainable Futures project addresses these issues through a holistic, household-based approach. By piloting the SHINE model (Sanitation, Hygiene, Income, Nutrition and Energy), developed by our partner InPact, the initiative supports families in strengthening their resilience and building more dignified, self-reliant lives.
Objective
This one-year pilot supports 100 vulnerable farming households with targeted, integrated interventions across five key areas: water, nutrition, health, income, and education. The goal is to improve living conditions through relevant, low-cost solutions while fostering community ownership and reducing long-term dependency on aid.
Activities
The project includes installing rainwater tanks to improve hygiene and reduce the time spent fetching water. Households also receive training and seeds to establish kitchen gardens, enhancing nutrition and food security. Health is promoted through the use of energy-saving stoves, while income generation is supported by training one individual per household to identify and develop an Income Generating Project (IGP). Education is strengthened through the installation of water tanks in schools, enabling teachers to clean dusty classrooms and improve hygiene practices. Additionally, solar lamps support children’s learning by providing reliable lighting after dark.
Outcome and Impact
The project aims to contribute to sustainable livelihoods, better health, and improved access to education. Beneficiaries will strengthen their food supply and nutrition, and gain improved access to sufficient, safe, and affordable water. The introduction of clean energy solutions—an innovation for many households—combined with enhanced skills in financial management, will empower participants to improve their livelihoods. The pilot phase will generate valuable insights into how integrated, locally led approaches can be scaled to support long-term rural transformation.
