Empowering Marginalized Communities

The project extends support to impoverished communities, notably indigenous Twa people, in Rulindo District, Rwanda. Historically marginalized, these communities face socioeconomic challenges due to forced evictions and widespread discrimination. Our mission is to uplift their livelihoods and foster social inclusion.

Objective

Our goal is to enhance livelihoods and promote health awareness, literacy, and education among the most vulnerable in the project communities.

Activities

In collaboration with Rwanda Youth Voice for Change, we’re establishing poultry farming and pottery arts cooperatives, providing stable income opportunities. Credit and saving groups ensure financial sustainability. Education initiatives include weekend classes for out-of-school youth and support for vulnerable children. Workshops and screenings on the most common diseases and infections improve health and well-being. Additionally, we support indigenous and vulnerable families in growing kitchen gardens to increase food security and fight malnutrition.

Outcome and Impact

The project reduces poverty, cultivates essential skills, and empowers indigenous communities by combating self-stigma and discrimination, fostering cultural pride, and promoting rights awareness.

“The kitchen garden has been impactful for my family and in my village. Currently, my family gets nutritious and healthy diets including green vegetables like cabbages, carrots, onions, root crops, spinach, etc. Additionally, the quantity is more than sufficient to distribute equally among the whole family. Now, I am happy to enhance the nutritional affordability for my family and earn additional income from the sale of surplus produce.”
