Livelihood in Bolivia
Individuals, families and communities secure livelihoods through increased self-sufficiency, sustainable agriculture and income.
Through its Healthy Municipalities Programme, Suyana strengthens livelihoods in rural communities by fostering self-sufficiency, sustainable agriculture, and climate-resilient economic opportunities. Under the strategy Vivo bien con mi esfuerzo (“Living well through my effort”), families improve housing conditions, adopt healthier lifestyles, and enhance self-sufficiency through sustainable farming and resource management.
We provide tailored training in areas such as livestock rearing, reforestation, and market-oriented agricultural production, while supporting the creation and formalisation of Farmers’ Economic Organisations (OECAs – Organización Económica Campesina y/o Asociación de Productores). These groups promote cooperation, strengthen production, and connect producers to fair markets and local value chains.
Collaboration with municipal governments advances responsible water use, reforestation, waste management, and environmental protection—building resilience and safeguarding natural resources for future generations.
A cornerstone of the programme is the training of local agricultural leaders known in Aymara as Satiris (“the sowers”), who share their expertise in animal health, sustainable agriculture, and resource management—ensuring that progress continues long after Suyana’s direct intervention.
Key Initiatives
Creating Healthy Homes Environments
The programme improves household living conditions by promoting hygiene, safety, and functionality. Families are supported in creating well-ventilated and organised home spaces, including separate sleeping areas for parents and children, study corners, and dining areas that encourage family cohesion.
Infrastructure upgrades include kitchens, latrines, handwashing stations, ecological refrigerators, and proper storage facilities, while pet shelters improve household hygiene and safety. Families also adopt safe water consumption habits, such as boiling water to prevent disease, and hygiene practices that build lasting health improvements.
What we do in practice:
- Improve household sanitation, ventilation, and cleanliness
- Create functional home areas for sleeping, studying, and dining
- Upgrade household infrastructure with kitchens, latrines, and handwashing stations
- Introduce ecological refrigerators and safe food storage
- Build pet shelters to improve hygiene and safety
- Promote safe water use and long-term hygiene habits
Sustainable Living – Agriculture & Water Use
Suyana supports farming families in building sustainable livelihoods through eco-friendly agriculture and responsible natural resource management. By adopting climate-resilient practices, families improve soil fertility, crop yields, and water efficiency.
Home bio-gardens and vegetable plots enhance food security and dietary diversity, while reforestation and waste management projects protect ecosystems and promote environmental stewardship. Water conservation strategies — including rainwater harvesting and efficient irrigation — strengthen resilience against drought and climate variability.
What we do in practice:
- Train families in eco-friendly and climate-resilient farming techniques
- Support the creation of bio-gardens and home vegetable plots for better nutrition
- Implement water conservation strategies and rainwater harvesting
- Promote reforestation, soil conservation, and responsible waste management
- Improve animal health through veterinary care and deworming campaigns
- Facilitate knowledge exchange between farmers, leaders, and local authorities
Strengthening Rural Economies (Farmer Cooperatives)
The programme promotes rural economic development by supporting the organisation and development of Farmers’ Economic Cooperatives (OECA – Organización Económica Campesina). These groups help smallholders gain market access, negotiate better prices, and engage in collective production.
Technical and business training strengthens farmers’ skills in sustainable agriculture, financial management, and entrepreneurship, enabling them to add value to their products and increase their competitiveness. Equipment sharing and local cooperation reduce costs and increase efficiency, fostering independence and long-term economic stability.
What we do in practice:
- Support the organisation and formalisation of farmer cooperatives
- Provide technical training in modern agricultural techniques and sustainable practices
- Strengthen business skills and market-oriented production
- Facilitate resource sharing to reduce costs and increase efficiency
- Connect farmers to local value chains and competitive markets
Ensuring Clean Water Access
Access to safe and reliable water sources is essential for healthy and sustainable communities. The programme works with municipalities and local leaders to establish community-led water committees that oversee water source protection, infrastructure maintenance, and fair distribution.
Through education on efficient water use and conservation, families learn to manage resources responsibly both at home and in the field. These efforts ensure the sustainability of local water systems and contribute to overall community well-being.
What we do in practice:
- Establish and train community-led water committees
- Protect and maintain local water sources
- Upgrade infrastructure for reliable access to drinking water
- Promote efficient water use for households and agriculture
- Educate families on water conservation and sustainable management
Developing Local Agricultural Leaders – the Satiris
A unique aspect of the Bolivian programme is the development of local agricultural leaders known in Aymara as Satiris, meaning “the sowers.” These community leaders are selected for their commitment and capacity to support others in their villages.
Through the Healthy Municipalities Programme, Satiris receive intensive theoretical and practical training in sustainable agriculture, livestock care, water and soil management, and leadership. They learn teaching methods that enable them to guide families in improving production, managing resources, and implementing new techniques.
Each Satiri is equipped with a veterinary kit and practical tools to provide animal care, deworming, and disease prevention. Upon completion, they receive official certification from Suyana and partnering agricultural institutions, recognising them as Rural Extensionists who ensure that progress continues long after project completion.
What we do in practice:
- Train and certify Satiris as local agricultural leaders and Rural Extensionists
- Provide theoretical and practical modules on crop and livestock management
- Equip participants with veterinary kits and teaching materials
- Support Satiris in mentoring other families and strengthening local production
- Promote peer-to-peer knowledge exchange to sustain community-led progress
Recycle Right – Sustainable Community Waste Management
Proper waste management is essential for public health and environmental protection. The programme engages communities in regular clean-up campaigns and provides infrastructure for waste collection and recycling.
Families are trained in waste segregation, composting, and proper disposal practices, while partnerships with municipal authorities ensure consistent waste services and enforcement of sustainable practices.
What we do in practice:
- Organise community clean-up and recycling campaigns
- Establish waste collection and recycling points
- Train families in composting and waste segregation
- Collaborate with municipalities to ensure sustainable waste systems
Restoring Ecosystems & Strengthening Climate Resilience
Communities play an active role in conserving biodiversity and restoring degraded ecosystems. Reforestation and soil conservation efforts prevent erosion, enhance carbon capture, and protect water sources.
Environmental education and community-led conservation strengthen awareness of sustainable land use and build local resilience to climate change. These efforts help protect livelihoods while ensuring a healthier environment for future generations.
What we do in practice:
- Restore degraded land with native, climate-resilient trees
- Prevent soil erosion through reforestation and soil conservation
- Protect local flora and fauna through community conservation
- Promote environmental education and awareness
- Apply nature-based solutions for sustainable land use
- Support communities and municipalities in managing forests and natural resources
